It was a warm afternoon in May when I was trekking through the woods, in search of a winged friend to fill my eyes and mind with beauty and amazement.

As I climbed uphill through tangled second-growth woods, I a felt an inner excitement emerging, when I spotted a Red-bellied Woodpecker clung to the trunk of a large oak tree.He let out a call and immediately a female woodpecker poked her head out of a hole half way up the tree, cocked her head to look up at him, and flew from the tree.
